Her health had deteriorated in recent weeks due to age-related issues, which had evolved into an increasingly delicate state that could not be reversed, despite the efforts of the veterinary team and the caregivers at the Zoo 💚.\r\n\r\nThe life expectancy of her species under human care is 39 years, so when the elephant arrived at the Zoo 16 years ago, she was already an old animal. Her experience in a circus had left her with physical and psychological scars that required a lot of dedication 🫶. Thanks to the specialized care from the Zoo's technical team, her condition improved over the years, and Yoyo formed a close-knit family with her companions, Susi and Bully, who had also come from similar experiences.\r\n\r\nYoyo's death is a great loss for the family of the Barcelona Zoo, especially for the entire team of professionals who work with elephants and who will continue to ensure the well-being of the other two who, like Yoyo, are also of advanced age 👩⚕️.\r\n\r\nOne of the current goals of the Barcelona Zoo is to be a refuge and a guarantor of well-being for animals that require special protection. We can proudly say that as of today, we are an international reference in the care and well-being of elderly elephants, experts in the specialized geriatric care they need.\r\n\r\nYoyo was a savanna African elephant, a species in a vulnerable situation due to ivory trafficking, included in the IUCN Red List.
