# JBP-121 - Add Givewell to recurring payout **Author:** @johnnyD ## **Proposal date:** February 23, 2022 ## Summary: Add *[Givewell Maximum Impact Fund](https://www.givewell.org/charities/top-charities)* to a recurring payout of 10k USD per funding cycle. At our current funding target, given the best available evidence, this money would save approximately **3 human lives per funding cycle**. ## Abstract: *Givewell* is a [research organisation](https://www.givewell.org/research) and is considered by many to be the world’s preeminent voice in how to give effectively. Their [*Maximum Impact Fund*](https://www.givewell.org/maximum-impact-fund) splits donations across *Givewell’s* [top charities](https://www.givewell.org/charities/top-charities). “We search for charities that **save or improve lives the most per dollar**. These are the best we’ve found. Supported by 20,000+ hours of research annually.” - *Givewell* on its top recommended charities. *Givewell* is endorsed by the likes of Sam Harris (who donates to *Givewell* a portion of the revenue of his company, *[Waking up](https://wakingup.com/foundation)),* Vitalik Buterin (who has donated [54M worth](https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/8Ts7hA2jM6t9xNcmo/vitalik-buterin-just-donated-usd54m-in-eth-to-givewell) of ETH) and Sam Bankman-Fried (Founder/CEO of FTX which donates a [portion of its total fee revenue](https://coinjournal.net/news/the-ftx-foundation-is-launched-to-fund-charitable-causes/)). > GiveWell has filled a huge gap. > > When I speak about why we ought to be doing more to help the world's poorest people — something I do often — the most frequent question I get is: how can we know that our donation will really help the poor? Until *GiveWell* came along, it was difficult to give a convincing answer to that question. Previous charity-rating organizations just looked at how much of a charity's income went to program expenses, rather than administration - and it doesn't take much thought to realize that that figure tells you nothing about how effective the charity's programs are. GiveWell has filled a huge gap, and at the same time has started a major trend towards greater transparency and demonstrated cost-effectiveness in the charitable world. > > > ~ **Moral philosopher, [Peter Singer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Singer), on *Givewell*** > ## Motivation: Effectively donate a portion of Juicebox’s expenses to improving the state of the world. ## Risks: There is a small risk that *Givewell* could misuse the funds we send them. However, given *Givewell’s* stellar reputation, this is extremely unlikely. ## Specification: ### **Payout recipient:** 0x7cF2eBb5Ca55A8bd671A020F8BDbAF07f60F26C1 To verify address see [Givewell’s list of crypto wallets](https://www.givewell.org/about/donate/cryptocurrency). ### **Payout amount:** 10k per funding cycle ### **Positive outcome:** *Givewell* estimates its [top charities](https://www.givewell.org/charities/top-charities) take between US$3000-4500 to save 1 human life, meaning **Juicebox would be saving approximately 3 lives per funding cycle** if this proposal is implemented. ## Rationale: 10k is a nice clean number. It would make up approximately 10% our new funding target (total payout expenses) - a relatively minimal impact for us, but clearly a massive amount of good for the people who need help the most. ## Timeframe: Implement for FC17. ## Copyright Disclaimer: ## **Sponsors:** [Zeugh](https://www.notion.so/Zeugh-d2e9734ddbfd432ea06098c264690162) @aeolian --- **Note: recurring payout recipients are required to participate in votes for future payout allocations.
